In the world of user-generated content, each one of us is capable of becoming an overnight sensation. As we observe, discuss, and analyze Web 2.0, we will start to unravel what it means to live in Web 2.0. But mostly—as this is above all a writing course—from the first day of class, we will compose an exploration of the many forms and types of media that make up our daily experiences. In doing so, we will compose a living record of the what it means to create and compose in Web 2.0.

Networks and Social Media
This School Friendship Network plot is from a website called www.visualcomplexity.com. Created by James Moody in 2001, it represents how students of different races associate themselves within certain networks. Here is a description from the website about this project.
Friendship network of children in a US school. Friendships are determined by asking the participants, and hence are directed, since A may say that B is their friend but not vice versa. Vertices are color coded according to race, as marked, and the split from left to right in the figure is clearly primarily along lines of race. The split from top to bottom is between middle school and high school, i.e., between younger and older children.
The colors of the dots in this image represent the following races.
Yellow - White Race
Green - Black Race
Pink - Other
How would you rationalize the splits that occur between ages and races in this plot? How is this plot similar or dissimilar to your online networks? How else could you group together the members of your social network?

This is SPARTA!
REMIX
Here is one of the many remixes that I found on youtube. The maker of this video took different internet clips and added king leonidas head to the people or objects in the video he also added some techno music to go along with the whole "this is sparta" statement which made it humorous, further entertaining and appealing to someone who is looking for a good laugh.

REMIX OF A REMIX
I absolutely love this commercial. It shows how an original can easily turn into a remix. Charles Barkley was commenting on a game, cool and dre (producers) thought it was funny and decided to expand on what he said. The expansion then turned into a hit song. This wasn’t happening in real life but after t-mobile branded and marketed it, it really became a hit, now I may be wrong…but I doubt it lol (from the song)
Assignment of remix!
This is the original!
This is the remix.
Remixes are important because it show how might someone view a situation like this from a different point of view or maybe people just find remixes to be another sense of humor.
The characters fighting in the game are funny but the commentary of
the people in the background (the players) is hilarious,or at least me and
all of my friends think it is. As for the remixed version it is hilarious.
There are many remixes of the original version on a variety of videos
which shows the versatility of the video (or at least the videos audio) and
how easily something can be spread that has nothing to do with what you were
searching for. an example being the power rangers remix. You wouldn't typically
see power rangers coupled with audio from the Wombo Combo video.
Remix
This is a remix of one of my favorite songs. The remix of Plain White T's "Rhythm of Love" is a slower version of the original. It was done by someone who put a lot of effort into making the remix but he decided to add a little twist to the remix by changing the beat of the song. He did so by changing it from a somewhat upbeat song to one that is calm and a little slower than the original. This person utilized his guitar as both the drums and the guitar that was needed to do the remix. The remix does not have much of a video, it's just a guy singing in front of his computer whereas the original shows a bunch of kids having fun at the beach then a bonfire and the setting was not in the twentieth first century. Both videos had the same message i.e. Love is what makes the world go around.
Original and Remix Homework
Super Bass Original Nicki Minaj
With the first video you can see the basic setting, in a small room and you can see everyone who's part of the band playing their instrument. Everything but the lyrics differs from the original. They use instruments which makes the song come out much better than the digital ones in the original. In the original video it shows Nicki Minaj dancing , sitting in a ice sculpture of a motorcycle or in a pink swimming pool, all these extravagant things to catch the viewer's attention. With the remix it is very simplistic, nothing much goes on, nothing to really catch your attention. Just this makes the message, with the remix you can focus on the song and how much talent these people have. The original is all very transparent. In the remix the song ends up coming out good even though the lyrics are pretty shallow but the singer/rapper makes it seem as though it's genuine. With the original it's more about the media, no message is being sent out to the listener. With the original you can't really see the singer's talent compared to the remix.
The remix to this is "Amish Paradise" by Weird Al Yankovich.
There are several different reasons for why I chose this video. First because it is hysterical, everything he says is so perfectly in sync and on point with the original. Another reason is because I have been watching Weird Al video's for years, and I thought his music were perfect examples of a remixed video. In every song he makes, the whole song always falls together and you can't help but find yourself singing along with it, especially in this one. Every lyric he speaks is relevant to his joke, and every line he says flows with the real version. I personally believe his video's work in every way, they catch your attention and make you want to listen to it again.
Remix HW
Remix
The original video is the press conference held by Obama on the death of Osama Bin Laden. The remix is a parody of the press conference. The remix differs from the original because it's in song form. The user uses photo shop and other tools to give him the same background as the original video. The video has the same message as the original just in different format.

REMIX
This hilarious video is of a young boy as he comes from the dentist. His father is recording him and he complains that he cant see anything and lets out a loud scream. He also complauns that he feels funny and asks if he has stitches and tries to touch them. His reactions to me were veryfunny. The user that created the remix adds a beat to the video and makes everything the boy sayd into a little funny song. I chose this video because i thought it was very humorous. I think everything works for the remix the beat and the way they kept repeating what the boy says in the original. This song was so interesting it became a song on itunes!
Kashmira English HW
Remix
As we all know Rihanna & Chris Brown got into a domestic altercation. The original video is one of the songs that was remixed in the remix video. In the remix video titled Rihanna's Revenge, it basically shows the retaliation against Chris. They remixed songs from both artist and turned every song into a violent remix.

Remix
I'm pretty sure everyone has seen this classic Youtube video that has attracted more than 370 million views. Some might wonder what is so fascinating about this video of a toddler and a baby and I do wonder too but the point is it is very likable. What is so fascinating about the remix is not only that it's the same video just "redone" but the amount of views it has gotten. The original video has almost 375 million views but the remix has about 38 million which is still a lot! The original is just a regular funny video but the remix is somewhat of a song. There is a lot of visual and eye-catching aspects of the remix that has gained it so much attention. Instead of it being just a plain original video clip, the remix has incorporated visual effects and syncopated speech to the video to make it the same video but in a whole different genre. Although the remix and the video go hand it hand since the plot is the same, but they are not a like in the sense that one is a song the other is a homemade video. It is just like in a song, the remix can become a whole different song because other features such as a underlying beat are added making it fall under a whole different category. It is the same in this video, the visuals and the song-like feature have made it pleasing to the ear and it does not really focus on the content of the video as the original does.
REMIX
Original
I chose this remix because now you have two fan base coming together. The fan base of "Young The Giant" and "Two Door Cinema Club". Through this maybe sales went up or popularity of the two bands. Also "My Body" is not a type of song people dance to. Its meant to be heard but with this remix it adds Techno and the dancers at clubs or parties can actually dance to this song. Eventually, increasing fans.
Remix Culture
I chose this video because I recently seen it on my FaceBook news feed and even though I've seen it before I found it funny and worth putting up as my video for homework. It incorporates pseudo-politics mixed in with southern rap. I personally don't enjoy listening to Waka Flocka Flame but I find his music funny in a way, and the remix even funnier.

Drake Ft. Alicia Keys - Unthinkable (Remix)
Original Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54kFhfxi-1U
I chose this remix because this song in my opinion, is much better and more popular than the original by Alicia Keys alone. Drake was the hottest rapper at the time this song was created and adding him to the song made it much more popular. You probably wouldn't hear the original song ever again on radio after the remix was made. What makes this remix better than the original is the little bit of rap that Drake brings into the R&B song. Mixing it up makes it more interesting. Even after Drake's verse, he is still singing along in the background which blends smoothly with Alicia Keys voice.
English hw remix video
I pick this video because i find it to be funny, but before i get into more details i will give you a little background on what it is. This video is a parody of the music video "run this town" by rihanna, jay z and kanye west and consist of what you would call "look alikes" performing in various scenes but in the order the original singers did but the only diffrence is they are making fun of an incident where chris brown allegedly beat up his girlfriend rihanna. I also picked this video because it was unique for example the way they portraied chirs brown was to be sort of a jerk because he hits women and then make excuses that he dont remember it. This may not be the truth but when people saw this video the actually thought that was the type of person he is. My point is that its amazing how one video can alter the way people look or view you. One thing that i didnt find working in this video is that it was'nt accurate, i know that it was meant to be funny be the video was primarily based on speculation and people own perspectives.

Hetalia: Axis Powers - Ending Remix
(Focus on the audio and lyrics not the video, it is not an animated music video)
World Remix
Some background on how the remix was made: The creator had a instrumental version of the full song for people to download. The creator told YouTube to create a video of themselves singing it in their language (with the original lyrics or made up lyrics that reflect your country of origin) and then video response it to the video with the instrumental version. After all the videos were gathered, the creator created a mix of those languages together all in one video.
The remix shows a few elements in the video. First element, it shows the nations' pictures of how they look like in the anime. Second, the fact that the editor got YouTubers to sing the song, even if its off pitch, and post it on YouTube. Third, are the many different languages in the video.
The original song was made to sound silly and childish, it's supposed to be humorous. The original also, reflects the character of the anime and the producers made the audio so they can profit from selling the CDs. The remix shows two main components. The first, would be to show that many people view the anime from around the world. Although, the anime is stereotyping nations around the world people generally enjoy the anime. The second, is to make a video that contained a user version of the song, instead of the official voice actors* cast version of the song. Since, the anime is based of many nations of the world the users are trying to recreate the song so it would represent their country in their language. Also, because the voice actor can only sing it in Japanese instead of their character's language the users can sing the song in their language for the corresponding character.
*There are many different versions of the song that contain the official voice actors singing they're character's version of the song. The are all published and put on Disc to make a profit off the songs.
If you want to listen to the other official versions of the song you can find them on YouTube. Search Maru Kaite Chikyuu, then type the nation's name and typing official is optional, you might get a user-generated one if you don't search official. Another option is searching for the Non-stop version. The different versions of this song are Germany, Japan, America, Russia, China, France, United Kingdom (or England), Chibitalia (Kid Italy), Holy Roman Empire, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Poland, Lithuania, Austria, Prussia, Spain, and Sealand. If you want to know what they're singing about go to Hetalia Wikai and look up the version you want.
This Video is the guyanese version of the Shamwow. I am Guyanese and I find this to be very funny. It shows up what a little time and patience can do to make a commercial a parody.
USER GENERATED CONTENT V.S. TRADITIONAL MEDIA
The user generated content I decided to view was SpongeBob and Patrick’s “Barbie Girl”. This video was effective in being humorous and entertaining. The portion of the video that was least effective was when it appeared that SpongeBob was singing his lip synchronization was off. This is not an example of traditional media productions because SpongeBob, a man, is singing about being a Barbie Girl, to Patrick who is portrayed as his Ken. I doubt traditional media is ready to broadcast the promotion of gay/bi/ transgendered lifestyles so this will remain a UGC Video.

This is a good example of user generated media. The creator of this video, Sarcasticgamer, was able to turn a normal advertisement video into a funny parody by replacing the original voiceover with his own. This video got over 3 million views because of the creative sarcastic remarks displayed throughout and if traditional media were to produce this then it wouldn't be the same. I would think it wouldn't be as funny, or hit the marks like this video had done.
This video's effectiveness is significant in many ways. It quickly derails 5 huge arguments proposed about the facts of 9/11. For the longest time I was confused because of documentaries and videos I have seen through television and other media related resources. I started to contemplate whether the tragedy of 9/11 was imposed on us by our on people. Thanks to user generated content, lots of those thoughts have been eradicated from my mind. This video is very effective in many ways, it portrays pictures and video evidence that prove events and help question others. There are lots of people who strongly believe 9/11 was caused by our government, and because of videos like these made by average every day people, we get to see both sides of the argument.
In all honesty, if a video like this was produced by "traditional" media, I think its main points would be reversed. I feel like the video would be enforcing the ideas that these events were NOT an act of terrorism. I have never seen a televised related source that agrees with the views of this video. This happens because, people who produce things that air on television are not doing it but for any other reason then to make money and satisfy their own agendas. Fear, gets viewers interested, it's a conversation starter. So for even people like me, I watched all the conspiracies, and the first thing I did after was tell someone else to watch it. But now with user-generated content, most people don't make a video for a profit or for their own benefit, they do it to open up peoples eyes.
Weird Coincidence?
To start this homework I went to Youtube and typed in "9/11 conspiracies" in the search bar, the first video that supposedly proves that the government was involved in some way had 1,155,522 views. Then the first video that opposed these beliefs had 131,417 views. Media generates fear for profit, I just hope that with user generated content we can make a dent in the ratio of people who follow and believe things because of popularity, as opposed to ones that actually make sense.
This is a perfect example of a user-generated video and how a very serious matter can be turned into a famous auto tune song on youtube and now is available on iTunes. A man broke in to an apartment in Lincoln Park and tried to rape a women. She screamed but by the time her brother came to help, the raper managed to escape. This tragic incident soon became a phenomenal hit all over New York. It also shows how you can be famous for doing the most simplest things and how music can be created at home by just having the proper equipment to do so.

Harry Potter Friday Parody by The Hillywood Show®
This video is a parody of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I and Rebecca Black’s “Friday”. I think this video is a great example of user generated content because the creator of this video was able to process his own version of the movie and the song. He produced his own faux production company and made a parody of the movie. He created his own lyrics to the songs and narrated it thru the movies actions. This video had over 1 million hits. It has internationally been awarded as Most Viewed, which proves that it has effectively entertained the viewers. This video is effective because it combines two popular content in pop culture and creates and entertaining spoof.
This video might have been different if it was produced by “traditional” media, such as TV channels, because then they would have gotten paid by Warner Brothers for the promotional aspects of this video. There would have been more CG effects and recognizable faces, rather then regular kids taking part. Being a user generated content; this video shows an independently diverted perception of this movie and song.

ENG User generated Content
This is a user generated remix of the nickelodeon show Rugrats, remixing the the show's theme song and sampling voices from the show. Aside from that, the rest of the visuals were custom made by the uploader. It's an intense reinvention of the show we watched as children, using drawn cutouts and custom animation of the characters. The visuals are bright and gyrating backed by a loud bass drum carrying the melody of the show's theme making the tribute effective and attention grabbing. It's obviously user generated with quite possibly a budget of zero dollars. It's because of this effort that would make a budgeted nickelodeon video entirely different. The animation would be sharper and closer to the original cartoon. There would be more animation as well, and possibly even more samples of the characters. Low budget or not, the idea was genuine and made with great effort.
Assignment 3: Epic Rap Battles Of History!
This video much like many others from this user pits different historical figures against one another to see who can make the other look like a fool. The fact that in this video there are two prominent writers of their times respectively come and face each other is amusing. Even more amusing is that they "Diss" each other in their own form of speech. If this was put on "traditional" T.V it wouldn't have curses in it first of all, although there might be more episodes or videos at a time because they would have a larger cast, but the ideas would probably be much different than it is currently
iBeat It.
This is some user generated content made by a YouTube called MysterGuitarMan. He was doing his own version of the song Beat It by Michael Jackson on his iPad. I see it kind of like a little tribute to MJ and he seems like he had fun making it. If you have fun making it and enjoy seeing your work coming out good then, why not put it out so that the rest of the people can watch and enjoy?
Not the first Michael Jackson he did either. This one is kind of cool too. Link below.

ENG User Generated Content
This video was done by my best friend Didi, and it is a very effective video because she took a personal aspect of her life and transformer it into a poem that will hopefully give hope to those that suffered the same way that she did. The tone in which she recites the poem changes from a weak girl to someone who grew stronger over time and I think that this conveys the message that no person should give up but should keep on fighting. The poet took an aspect of her life and changed it into a message of hope and of God's power. If this video was produced by a traditional media, such as a television channel, then the video would be of better quality and it would have probably been in the form of a commercial or a documentary on social or domestic issues.
English Homework
This is an example of a user-generated content. The creator took a popular song, and old cartoon as basically played with it. Everyone knows The cat Daddy song wasn't out when teletubbies was out. The user took the cartoon and turned it into a mini video to the song showing the cartoon doing as the song says.
english hw
This video is another example of user generated content. This video was made by a user called In Depth Perception and what this user did was create an alternative ending to the movie Titanic. The original author of the Titanic ended off with Rose, one of the main characters, falling in love with a lower-class male while her family tries to tear them apart, while aboard the Titanic. In the end, as we all know the Titanic ended up sinking and most of the upper-class people got on rescue boats to safety while most lower-class ended up dying while the ship was sinking or surviving the ships sinking and dying from how cold the oceans water was. But Rose stayed with Jack, the lower-class boy she fell in love with, while the rest of her family got on the rescue boats and while they both made it of the ship safely only Rose survived while Jack died from the freezing water. In the end Rose ended up growing old only having been in love with Jack and never any other man.In this video however, the creator made a new ending where Rose and Jack both survive the sinking of the Titanic, grow old together, have kids and live happily ever after.
I personally favor the original ending of this movie because movies nowadays are a little too predictable. The creator of this video went with the more predictable ending of the movie where the two lovers survive the sinking of the Titanic, grow old together, have kids and live a happily ever after kind of life. I think if this version of the ending was produced by traditional media people would have different views on the movie. The fact that the ending wasn't so happy might have grabbed the interest of the public more.

Katekyo Hitman Reborn - This is War
This video is effective because if the viewers have watched the anime they would understand the video perfectly. If the viewer has not watched it, in the comments I've seen "what's the name of this anime?". The song fits with the anime pretty well although the anime is not based on war the lyrics resembles parts of the anime. The video editor did an excellent job at running through 203 episodes to find the right scenes to put this all together, and timing the video with the audio at the right time. If it was generated from traditional media, I believe that this would have not been made unless they would profit from the video or the video would generate more viewers for the show.
P.S. Am I aloud to share one more?!? It was so hard to choose a video!
P.P.S. I'll just post links if your interested in any of these:

- Maplestory - It's Missin' a Mouth <== Based on the anime Axis Powers Hetalia

Sunday, September 11, 2011
This video is the perfect example of user generated content. It has more than 6 million views and once you finish watching it you'll understand why it is extremely popular. This 5 minute clip was filmed with only a 300 dollar budget. It has also landed the producer a 30 million dollar movie deal.
What makes this film so effective is that it appears to be a high-budget flick filmed in one of the top studios of Hollywood. Although this film has all the visuals of expensive Hollywood effects, it was filmed by a young Uruguyan man with computer based programs. It has all the makings of a memorable sci-fi flick and who doesn't love a tastefully made Sci-Fi movie?
This video has gotten so much fame and recognition that it was even linked on Kanye West's blog.
Had it been shown on other sources of media such as on Tv, it wouldn't have received its fame as fast as it did in my opinion. Since the film was filmed in Montevideo, Uruguay it would have taken alot longer for it to have reached the United States. Websites, such as Youtube, have given the ability and the freedom for artists to express themselves to a world-wide audience. If it was presented on TV first, there could have been a posibility for editing or cencorship by an outside party. This would have limited and restricted the artistic brilliance of the film.

Lebron's Travel vs Chicago Bulls Game 4 5/24/11
This video shows that their was a flaw in the officiating in game 4 of the NBA Eastern Confererence finals. The person who created the video saw this flaw and made a video to point out to us that the Miami Heat did not defeat the Chicago Bulls fairly in game 4. According to the video, Lebron clearly did travel but the officials did not call it. This video was effective because it zoomed into the action so that viewers can clearly see how many steps Lebron took after picking up his dribble. Also, this video was short and simple. The creater of the video showed us exactly what we needed to see, nothing more to waste our time.
This video would have never been seen on traditional TV because the NBA always does its best to cover up their flaws. Bulls fans now have a reason to say that Lebron is favored by the officials. The video shows us that there is a flaw in Lebron's game and that he might not be as good as they say he is. Lebron haters can keep on hating. If it wasn't for this person, Bulls fans might not have an argument or excuse to why their team lost game 4 to the Heat.

9/8 Class...
The process of writing down original ideas based on our thoughts, feelings and the work of others is what effective writing is all about. I asked you to think about four things after last class:
1. Recall what you wrote in class about the object in your life you value.
2. Think about how is this object connected (or not) to what you wrote in your "A day in the life of my Internet Usage" assignment?
3. Read United Nations Declares Internet Access a Basic Human Right
4. Watch and the Youtube video Humanity Lobotomy - Second Draft.
How are these four very different (yet similarly related items) connected? This is not an easy question to answer. However, these are the sorts of questions we have to learn to answer. Below are three responses from our blog. (Thanks everyone!) Please pick one and look for how your classmate attempted to connect these ideas together. Please write a response to your classmate's post. Make sure to highlight their connections and to expand their answers to include a synthesis of these four bits of information. Please save this writing for your midterm portfolio.
[1.]
1) My computer is the greatest source i get internet i receive from.
After reading the article about United Nations declaring Internet access a basic human right i was very surprised. I thought to myself how people lived for thousands of years without it. There are many people today who don’t use Internet or any kind of web for anything. I don’t think the Internet can be a basic human right if you have to pay for it. After watching the YouTube video about humanity lobotomy I think of how the Internet would be if it was privately owned. There wouldn’t be any sites that users contribute to. If there are no sites that humans contribute to the Internet wouldn’t be the same, there would not be as much demand for it. If there isn't any demand for the Internet the companies who own them wouldn’t be making any profit from it, so ultimately i don't think it will ever happen.
I think the Internet did not kill a lot of critics, but made them used for better. If your video gets a lot of critics it just gains popularity, which is ultimately what you wanted. For every critic there is someone who agrees with it. People can put whatever they want online and not get judged. If there is no one like you in your city there is one in the world and the Internet helps you find them, so you feel more comfortable with the way you are. The Internet makes everyone an author and people feel more special when they can express their feelings to millions over the Internet.
We are beginning to connect what we use, which is the Internet, to how we’re being used, which is the Internet changing the way we think and our minds without us noticing, to how we can use web 2.0, which is for using the Internet for basically anything we could imagine.
After reading the "Untied Nations Declares The Internet A Basic Human Right", I have mixed emotions. Immediately I felt, yes absolutely the internet should be a basic human right, but then oppositional ideas started to settle in. In reality internet should be a basic human right, but this will never be. As Elissa said, government will always intervene and get involved in certain situations regarding user-generated content. Although this may strike you as a problem, we need rules and regulations for usage of the internet. Otherwise it will be a breeding ground for many criminals, offenders, and even terrorists. The internet makes it so easy to learn how to do destructive things and to conspire with others when it comes to doing this things. So by declaring it a basic human right, it should be understood that every person should have access to it, but there will still be guidelines and rules. The way I understand this, is by comparing it to driving a car. Driving is a basic human right, but even though it is a privilege to all, there are still rules and there are still consequences to not following those rules.
Going along with the idea about the internet being a basic human right, a controversy has developed and the video "Human Lobotomy-Second Draft?" was made. In this video it discusses the fact that certain companies are trying to buy out the internet, and whether or not that is okay. Personally I feel, it should not be another pawn of capitalism. Everything that these companies are fighting for are only to bring more money to their pockets. The internet has been and still is based off of user-generated content. It is the only thing that is not based on how a huge corporation would like to do things. It is finally something that give people every where the chance to share their ideas, thoughts, comments, concerns, and problems quicker and more efficiently. By stripping everyone of this, it will kill the future of the internet and the great things it has in store.
Finally, the last discussion about user-generated media killing critics. I love this idea, I know so many people who refused to watch a movie or play a game due to the bad reviews of a critic. I think this is ridiculous every person has different ideals then that of a critic who thinks they know better then anyone else. I feel this will even help out some people who's songs or video or game flopped because of a couple bad reviews. I feel people should decide what's good and what's not for themselves. I feel critics are not gone, but critics who really influence people are. I encourage everyone to be a critic, because its starts conversation, it gets things going. Everyone has an opinion why miss out on the opportunity to be one because of a specific person or "critic" says it isn't worth your time. One last question, What qualifies a person as a critic?
Alarm Clock
My alarm clock does not relate directly to the reading but my daily use of the internet makes me feel that internet access is very important and should be available to everyone. I can't imagine myself without internet access. However, the internet is not as important as a basic neccesity such as food or water. We do pay for internet access. We dont get it for free, therefore it isnt a basic human right. We can live without the internet but it would be very tough.
The video shows that the internet is affected by companies which i think is not right because the internet should be a place where everyone can freely express themselves. People have their opinions and it is a basic human right to be able to express them.
Connection.
Values and User-Generated content
Yesterday, in class we wrote about an object that is of value in our life. The object I chose to write about was my Game Boy SP, and as we were discussing the objects with our classmates we kind of had a "remember back then" moment. I remember having that Game Boy SP and sharing my gaming experience to my friends around the neighborhood. We would all sit outside a house and talk about these games (Pokemon, for example, was one of our favorites). If you didn't have a Game Boy, all you did was sit and watch them play having no idea what they were talking about. In my homework, a day in the life of our internet usage I talked about games. I still play games while I'm at this age of transitioning into an adult. Although, it is a different gaming experience the Game Boy SP was one of the first and few game systems I had when I was a child. It was one of the sparks of how gaming became a hobby in my life.
The internet itself was a phenomenon and I'm glad to have it in my daily life. It has become my sort of communication to the outside world. To the people around the country or in different nations and share ideas. Now, I have the internet within my reach it has become a great tool to connect with people around the world playing MMOs. If this was taken away because of people in power fearing that they might lose control of what they have (in the video’s case profits), then I would most definitely protest against it. The United Nation is correct, in the most part the internet has been a tool to express opinions, and it promotes the progress of society as a whole. We can now connect to a different side of the world and have a diverse conversation. This can most definitely change the way the next generation thinks, as more websites bring together people of different backgrounds, engage in conversations/debates that can change the way people view other nations. I would disagree with the control over the internet and limiting the content on which it is show. This is now viewed as the government (or people in power, who have fortune) silencing those that have something to say. It is as simple as playing monopoly, where this one player has all this land and the other players are piqued by the fact that they have to cross that side of the board. Then, eventually leading to the other players paying the rent for landing in that player’s area.
I have no comments on the critic discussion. Okay, maybe one comment, critics are educated on what they should say for the readers to pick out the information that might interest them on what the critic is criticizing. They are professionals and are educated for criticizing. Some of the comments make a valid point that the internet did not take away critics jobs just create a large amount of critics.
Many people oppose the fact to have limitations on how they can surf the web and the ways they contribute to it. Most of the internet is made up of individuals posting up videos and connecting with others all around the world. I find the internet to be a crucial source that must stay around and be open to everyone because we do have a right to have access to it.

Values, user-generated content and you!
How is this object connected (or not) to what you wrote in your "A Day in the life of my Internet Usage" assignment?
How are these two ideas related to your (short!) reading for homework, United Nations Declares Internet Access a Basic Human Right and the Youtube video Humanity Lobotomy - Second Draft?
Consider the following discussion taking place on TED, "Has the Internet and User-Generated Media killed the critic..." (What sorts of opinions and ideas do you see developing in the discussion between users? Does anyone have an opinion or perspective that you agree with or disagree with?)
How are we beginning to connect what we use, to how we're being used, to how we can use Web 2.0?
9/6 Assigning value to objects in our lives
--What is your relationship with this object? Be as specific as possible. (Consider what exactly is a relationship before answering this question.)
--What are your attitudes or feelings towards this object? The objects in our life can have a positive or negative impact on our lives. How exactly?
--Is there a financial cost to owning or using this object?
--Is there a social or personal cost of having (or not having!) or interacting, with this object? Think about how this object affects you and those around you. Does the social or personal cost outweigh the financial cost?
--Can you remember your life before this object entered into your life? (This question asks you to think about how exactly your life was before this object entered into your life.)
--Can you envision your life after this object no longer serves any purpose in your life?

Ten years from now...
The New York Times is running a piece on what school will look like in ten years. What do you think the classroom will look like? Is what we're doing a preview of what's to come? Or do you think we'll go back to using pieces of slate and chalk soon?
Distractions!
Do you have any tips for dealing with distractions on the internet?

9/1: Your brain on the internet.
The following are some points I think are important to think about after reading Author Nicholas Carr: The Web Shatters Focus, Rewires Brains .
For homework, please respond to the text preceeding one of these numbers in brackets. Be as detailed as possible.
[1] "Brain activity of the experienced surfers was far more extensive than that of the newbies, particularly in areas of the prefrontal cortex associated with problem-solving and decisionmaking."
[2] "The new scans revealed that their brain activity had changed dramatically; it now resembled that of the veteran surfers. 'Five hours on the Internet and the naive subjects had already rewired their
brains,'"
[3] "'The current explosion of digital technology not only is changing the way we live and communicate,' Small concluded, “but is rapidly and profoundly altering our brains.'"
[4] "Many educators were convinced that introducing hyperlinks into text displayed on monitors would be a boon to learning. Hypertext would strengthen critical thinking, the argument went, by enabling students to switch easily between different viewpoints. Freed from the lockstep reading demanded by printed pages, readers would make all sorts of new intellectual connections between diverse works. The hyperlink would be a technology of liberation."
What is hypertext??
[5] "By the end of the decade, the enthusiasm was turning to skepticism. Research was painting a fuller, very different picture of the cognitive effects of hypertext. Navigating linked documents, it turned out, entails a lot of mental calisthenics—evaluating hyperlinks, deciding whether to click, adjusting to different formats—that are extraneous to the process of reading. Because it disrupts concentration, such activity weakens comprehension. A 1989 study showed that readers tended just to click around aimlessly when reading something that included hypertext links to other selected pieces of information. A 1990 experiment revealed that some 'could not remember what they had and had not read.'"
[6] "A 2007 scholarly review of hypertext experiments concluded that jumping between digital documents impedes understanding. And if links are bad for concentration and comprehension, it shouldn’t be surprising that more recent research suggests that links surrounded by images, videos, and advertisements could be even worse."
[7] "The Net’s ability to monitor events and send out messages and notifications automatically is, of course, one of its great strengths as a communication technology. We rely on that capability to personalize the workings of the system, to program the vast database to respond to our particular needs, interests, and desires. We want to be interrupted, because each interruption—email, tweet, instant message, RSS headline—brings us a valuable piece of information. To turn off these alerts is to risk feeling out of touch or even socially isolated. The stream of new information also plays to our natural tendency to overemphasize the immediate. We crave the new even when we know it’s trivial."
[8] "It’s likely that Web browsing also strengthens brain functions related to fast-paced problem-solving, particularly when it requires spotting patterns in a welter of data. A British study of the way women search for medical information online indicated that an experienced Internet user can, at least in some cases, assess the trustworthiness and probable value of a Web page in a matter of seconds. The more we practice surfing and scanning, the more adept our brain becomes at those tasks. (Other academics, like Clay Shirky, maintain that the Web provides us with a valuable outlet for a growing “cognitive surplus”; see Cognitive Surplus: The Great Spare-Time Revolution."
[9] "We know that the human brain is highly plastic; neurons and synapses change as circumstances change. When we adapt to a new cultural phenomenon, including the use of a new medium, we end up with a different brain, says Michael Merzenich, a pioneer of the field of neuroplasticity. That means our online habits continue to reverberate in the workings of our brain cells even when we’re not at a computer. We’re exercising the neural circuits devoted to skimming and multitasking while ignoring those used for reading and thinking deeply."
[10] "There’s nothing wrong with absorbing information quickly and in bits and pieces. We’ve always skimmed newspapers more than we’ve read them, and we routinely run our eyes over books and magazines to get the gist of a piece of writing and decide whether it warrants more thorough reading. The ability to scan and browse is as important as the ability to read deeply and think attentively. The problem is that skimming is becoming our dominant mode of thought. Once a means to an end, a way to identify information for further study, it’s becoming an end in itself—our preferred method of both learning and analysis. Dazzled by the Net’s treasures, we are blind to the damage we may be doing to our intellectual lives and even our culture."
How might the proposed merger of AT&T and T-Mobile affect you?

What does the merger of AT&T and T-Mobile (or rather, AT&T's desired acquisition of T-Mobile) have to do with you? We all rely on corporations, such as AT&T and T-Mobile for internet access on our phones or smartphones, how might this merger effect your access to the internet?
